Alabama & Shellhead

Don't ask me how it happened, but I've been pulled into spending my spring break in Mobile, Alabama, supervising/advising/chaperoning the SU chapter of Habitat for Humanity for the 2010 Collegiate Challenge or some such thing.  Its cool with me - I guess I'm filling at the last minute so the students can go on the trip.  Apparently all I'll have to do is be on site while everyone is working on building stuff.  That's ok - I'm pretty bad with a hammer and saw anyway.  I'm not griping or anything - what's getting me is that this happened kind of quickly and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.  I'm glad to be helping out and I hope I can do some good.  But for right now I'm still waiting on some detailed info to help... ah... seal ah the deal ah

I'm driving myself down while the others will fend for themselves.  I'll try to keep updates rolling here as time goes by.  I'm heading out on Saturday, March 6th and will probably be back sometime on the 13th.  Not bad.  One cool benefit is that my grandparents live about an hour away from Mobile and I'm hoping to break away for at least one night to go see them and take them out to dinner or something.  They don't bowl as much as they used to, so that might be out of the question.  Maybe we'll go to Luby's and be home by 5:30 (ha ha)

DUDE!  I caved and picked up the conclusion to "World's Most Wanted" (see my massively long previous post).  It. Rocked.  'Nuff said.  I'll comment on it some other time but for now just know that if you aren't reading this stuff then you're missing out.  I needed a cigarette after reading it last night (and of course it put me behind on my grading, but I digress).  Iron-Friggin'-Man.  Yeah!

Shout out to my peeps who got the wordplay... Well anyway, welcome to the third decade of the 21st century. It looks like I built this space awhile back and have come back to it at times, only to drift away for an average of eight years. Beady Beady Beady

Ten bucks if you get the connection with this picture and the post title   One of the things I've been trying to do for the past few months is finding space to do some kind of creative work that is different from writing or reading or whatever happens in that side of the brain. Part of the fun with burnout and trying to recover from it was finding something interesting that worked out the more artistic side of the cranium.  I found that I dig painting - especially watercolors. I found that I'm not too good at it though, and got kind of frustrated. On top of that, I never knew what to paint and when I did paint it seemed like it went really fast. I guess I didn't have enough patience or time. I have a lot of supplies sitting in the cabinet and I'd like to give it another try someday. In the meantime, as corny as it sounds I've found myself doing what I call "bead art" (and I'm sure others call it the same thing) - it's basically small plastic beads ...

Never say never

... just do the best you can. Received official confirmation from the Dean's Office a few minutes ago that she recommends me for the Chair position starting in July. The confirmation was sent to the Provost's office and I was copied on it - from what I've heard from others (and from the Dean) is that once this point is reached it's pretty much a done deal. So I'll start up on July 1 officially for a three year term. I'm pretty excited about the change. I'm also pretty anxious and hesitant about it. I know it will be a ton of (new) work in addition to what I regularly do. I guess the big question is what kind of new work and how much will it be? I know it will be different and more; I just don't know how different or how much. Again, part of bringing this thing back from the dead is to document how things go (without giving away too many details, of course).
